SODOM’S SINS
A different Look?
It seems that recently American Christianity has focused on Homosexuality as THE major sin. Of course, transgender people are included in that. We have a long acronym so that all the possible variations are included. Trans people are usually included, whether they are sexually active or not.
Often, Sodom and its destruction are referred to as an example of God’s judgment on Homosexuality. However, the Bible is very explicit as to what Sodom’s sin was.
NLT Ezekiel 16:49–50 “Sodom’s sins were pride, gluttony, and laziness, while the poor and needy suffered outside her door. She was proud and committed detestable sins, so I wiped her out, as you have seen.”
NIV Ezekiel 16:49 – 50 “‘Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore, I did away with them as you have seen.
It would seem that pride – arrogance, gluttony – overfed, and laziness -unconcern, haughty – pride. Were their sins.
It seems their destruction came because of their preoccupation with themselves, while the poor and needy were not taken care of.
The result: they were destroyed.
Go on any Social Media and read the comments. Lots of evidence of
Self-entitlement (pride, arrogance, haughtiness).
Self -indulgence (gluttony, overfed).
Self-focus (Unconcern, lazy).
Go to any Mall or Church in America, for that matter, and you can see evidence of each of these. While at church, they are pointing their fingers at the Homosexuals as the cause of our nation’s problems while exclaiming loudly, “the Bible says”.
The New Testament on this subject says: HCSB Romans 1:27 “The males in the same way also left natural relations with females and were inflamed in their lust for one another. Males committed shameless acts with males and received in their own persons the appropriate penalty of their error.”
I read that to mean each individual, as a part of that receive their own punishment.
However, the sin of focusing on “self” to the exclusion of others brings national disaster as well as spiritual death.
Oh well, it is a lot easier and much more fun to deflect the focus on their sin rather than our sin.
Just an old man’s musings.
